Sprouting Beans

In this cheap but volume-heavy
One-of-a-set-of-Ikea-three bowl,
The bounce themselves in,
Light and sharp-like.

Some scatter daft across
The worktop. Keen to keep
So permanently dormant
In their youth (and so their possibility).

The overnight soak reveals yet more,
Content to hold hard: they have
Sunk, sulky and stubborn.
(I’ll set these aside for boiling.)

Sweet and musty, those matured
Awake to sprout…and in the morning
Feel warm like sleeping bees
Being busy in my fingers.

I am recalling the smell
Of spring in spring rain.
